Render unlit particles as transparent in Trapcode Particular Shader?

Hi there,

I recently followed this excellent tutorial by Harry Frank on creating Trapcode form type effects in Particular - the reason I wanted this effect in Particular is because I wanted to wrap some waves around an image of a dancer - like a ribbon.

I thought I had nailed it, however once I had created the wave I wanted - I noticed that if I changed the background to anything but black - the effect was lost as the particles that are not being illuminated render as black.

I have attached some images which highlight this issue.

Is there a way to have these unlit particles render as transparent? That way creating a transparent wave that the image will show through?

I've tried playing around with blending modes, but it doesn't seem to make a difference? Although perhaps I'm not doing it right, so any help would be appreciated - I'm relatively new to AE you see.

Or is there a way to blend or mask this wave over objects so they interact correctly?

This image shows the issue I am having - the particles not being lit by the lighting in AE are rendering out as black, or are basically unilluminated.

My question is - how can I have the unilluminated particles render as transparent so I can place it on anything but a black background?

This image shows how the wave looks on black

Thank you so much for your help - I really appreciate any advice you may be able to offer.
